History of ESAFETY

How we started

Safety Matters, Inc. was founded in 1997 in Grand Haven, MI as an environmental, health and safety consulting company. During that time it became apparent there was a huge need in the area of training. It was becoming more difficult for employers to effectively and regularly train their employees in a cost-effective manner. While the need for better training options was increasing, so was technology and the internet. In 2001 ESafetyOnline, now eSafety, was launched, giving companies the ability to train and report on employee training online. As of now, our Learning Management System (LMS) is on it’s third major upgrade, as we are constantly looking at how to give our clients the best and most effective way to track and train their employees. We look forward to showing you all we can do!

Dedicated, and here’s why…

We are very proud of our company, our service, and our commitment to our clients. Since the very beginning, we have been committed to three basic truths: First, safety is important. It’s not just about doing something a certain way at work, it’s about keeping you safe and creating a culture of safety for your whole business. Second, safety effects everything. What you do at work can dramatically effect how you live at home, especially when you are involved in a safety incident. And third, people are our priority. We want everyone, from our staff to yours, to have the opportunity to lead a positive and healthy life.

Rob Torrey

Rob Torrey

Founder & President

As founder of eSafety, I am incredibly proud we are entering our 25th year in business. When I say I have nearly four decades of experience in environmental, safety and health, it hits me that I may just be getting old! However, I love a challenge and still feel young (at heart), so I intend to continue to do what I love and love what I do. I can truly say that applies to my business. I’ve found that in the end, it is all about people and the relationships you build. Convincing someone to do something the safe way every time, promoting to manage to zero injuries while supporting the bottom line, or mentoring a young person in following their dreams are all about the relationships you cultivate. That is why I am most pleased to have a team, that not only feels the same, but demonstrates it every day. To be able to lead, coach and mentor this group is an honor and a challenge!

Technology Director

With a degree in Occupational Safety and Health Management from Grand Valley State University, my work experience started in the Risk Group for NES Rentals. As I transitioned over to eSafety my focuses expanded from safety expert, to tech maestro, systems development leader and the drinker of WAY too much coffee, Venti Americano, Please! My husband and 3 little kiddos keep me moving at 100mph in 4 different directions (insert more coffee) but when we slow down, we love to spend time out on the water as a family, and travel and explore new places whenever we can! Working with me you’ll quickly find I like people, I love what I do, and I will never win a spelling bee… but that’s why they invented auto-correct!

Sales Director

I strive to give the best customer service and build strong work relationships with our clients. I have always had that focus from being on teams growing up, whether through sports teams and school projects, being a (youngest) sibling, or waiting tables at a local, family-owned restaurant. I graduated from Central Michigan University with honors, where I studied abroad in Italy and caught the “travel bug”. If I’m not looking up a new travel destination I’m probably checking online for rescue dogs to adopt. My first (rescue) love will always be Carl, the cat.

Course Creation Director

On the banks of the Red Cedar, there is a school known to all…Michigan State University! I bleed green and white, and have done my best to convert everyone around me as well. After my time at State, I moved to Washington, D.C. where I had the good fortune to work for the American Red Cross on a project to increase communication and donations with its top 100 donors. I also had a great experience working for LivingSocial at the height of its popularity and growth. As an aspiring renaissance man, you’ll find this self-proclaimed cinephile diving into anything from starting a podcast, finishing a short story, learning how to make pasta from scratch, or hopping on a plane to Spain to watch the Running of the Bulls. This all comes from the fact I believe in a work-life blend, as long as you work really hard. At the age of 14 I co-founded a cut flower business to fund a school trip to Peru.

Marketing Director

Communication is the key. With an Undergrad from Central Michigan University in Integrated Public Relations (Fire Up Chips!) and a Masters in Communication from Grand Valley State University, I can say I am a people-person. My experience includes working as a building supervisor at the Rec Center in college, interning with a Single-A baseball team, and coordinating events at an event center. Many of my work stories include but are not limited to: baseball players, bridal parties, and herding cats (literally and figuratively speaking!). I love cooking, however I am known for being the slowest eater you will ever meet. As a mom of two young kids, my family stays busy with Barbies, outdoor adventures, and the latest movie released on streaming. Loving every minute!

Amy Slanger

Compliance Director

With a degree in Industrial Environmental Health Management in Industrial Hygiene from Ferris State University, I have built 24 years of experience in creating and applying training in food manufacturing. This gave me a great amount of knowledge and experience in various roles involving Safety, Human Resources, Training, Sanitation and Operations. I’m all about being organized and love to visualize my projects. I am notorious for using Post-it notes to prioritize and problem solve on my desk or a board. The more colors, the better! Post-its are a must have at home too; with two very active girls my family loves being outside, playing sports, and staying on-the-go.

Customer Champion

As someone who has been involved with small business for over 25 years, I can truly say it is all about relationships! I have always been ready to jump in and try something new, whether it was becoming a wedding coordinator, selling organic cheese and kitchen towels, or building and selling caskets and urns. I love people! If I’m not in the office, you’ll find me exploring the many beautiful Ottawa County Parks, taking my Beagle on long walks, and spending as much time as possible with my family and friends. After living for 12 years in the UP (Upper Peninsula, MI) I will always be a Yooper at heart!

Customer Champion

I take great pride in ensuring a positive customer experience! Being on many teams and in a leadership role in the past, I know how important it is to communicate well and get everyone working together. Having grown up in Ludington, MI, I am happy that Lake Michigan is still in my backyard. If I’m not outside hiking or playing with my two chocolate labs, you will find me preparing a delicious meal! I’m happy to be a part of the eSafety team, and proud and ready to assist you in keeping your workplace safe!

eLearning Developer

I received my undergrad in Multimedia Studies under Communications from Olivet Nazarene University (not Olivet College in Michigan!). With my schooling and broadcast news experience, my digital media knowledge expands across several multimedia niches, ranging from photography to social media. With all of this, I love videography the most! I have worked at multiple television stations covering the news and sports. Filming the local, professional sports teams was always a treat, as I was a collegiate athlete myself, playing all four years of NAIA division college softball. Now, I enjoy spending time outdoors with my family and dog, where you will most likely find us going for a hike or at a Lake Michigan beach.

I strive for creativity and excellence in all that I do, whether it be illustration, animation, 3D modeling, sound design, or scriptwriting. I am an Eagle Scout and Valedictorian with a BFA in Digital Media. I’ve drawn storyboards for independent films and have even made my own cartoon short! When I’m not drawing, I like watching movies with family and playing board games with friends. When the opportunity strikes, I love to play along to my new favorite songs on the drum set.

As someone who loves drawing and painting, I graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration. I have participated in gallery shows across Michigan and have had the privilege to collaborate with many artists across the United States, including working with a producer from Disney Television Animation. If I’m not at my desk, you’ll find me relaxing on Lake Michigan beaches, hiking trails, and spending quality time with family and friends (and my beloved family pets, Lily the golden retriever and Mathilda or “Mrs. Love” the tortoiseshell cat.) If there is one thing I’d want you to know about me, it’s that I have always loved children’s book illustrations and hope to bring my dream of illustrating a book to life one day!
