History of ESAFETY
How we started
Safety Matters, Inc. was founded in 1997 in Grand Haven, MI as an environmental, health and safety consulting company. During that time it became apparent there was a huge need in the area of training. It was becoming more difficult for employers to effectively and regularly train their employees in a cost-effective manner. While the need for better training options was increasing, so was technology and the internet. In 2001 ESafetyOnline, now eSafety, was launched, giving companies the ability to train and report on employee training online. As of now, our Learning Management System (LMS) is on it’s third major upgrade, as we are constantly looking at how to give our clients the best and most effective way to track and train their employees. We look forward to showing you all we can do!
Dedicated, and here’s why…
We are very proud of our company, our service, and our commitment to our clients. Since the very beginning, we have been committed to three basic truths: First, safety is important. It’s not just about doing something a certain way at work, it’s about keeping you safe and creating a culture of safety for your whole business. Second, safety effects everything. What you do at work can dramatically effect how you live at home, especially when you are involved in a safety incident. And third, people are our priority. We want everyone, from our staff to yours, to have the opportunity to lead a positive and healthy life.
CORE TEAM MEMBERS
Founder & President
As founder of eSafety, I am incredibly proud we are entering our 20th year in business. When I say I have nearly four decades of experience in environmental, safety and health, it hits me that I may just be getting old! However, I love a challenge and still feel young (at heart), so I intend to continue to do what I love and love what I do. I can truly say that applies to my business. I’ve found that in the end, it is all about people and the relationships you build. Convincing someone to do something the safe way every time, promoting to manage to zero injuries while supporting the bottom line, or mentoring a young person in following their dreams are all about the relationships you cultivate. That is why I am most pleased to have a team, that not only feels the same, but demonstrates it every day. To be able to lead, coach and mentor this group is an honor and a challenge!
Sales & Systems Management
With a degree in Occupational Safety and Health Management from Grand Valley State University, my work experience started in the Risk Group for NES Rentals. As I transitioned over to eSafety my focuses expanded from safety expert, to tech maestro, systems development leader and the maker of one mean cup of coffee! With 3 small kids under 3 years old (yes, that includes twins!) my hobbies now include watching Disney movies, spending time out on the water with family, and wandering around Target with a Venti Americano. Working with me you’ll quickly find I like people, I love what I do, and I will never win a spelling bee… but that’s why they invented auto-correct!
Financials & Client Retention
I strive to give the best customer service and build strong work relationships with our clients. I have always had that focus from being on teams growing up, whether through sports teams and school projects, being a (youngest) sibling, or waiting tables at a local, family-owned restaurant. I graduated from Central Michigan University with honors, where I studied abroad in Italy and caught the “travel bug”. If I’m not looking up a new travel destination I’m probably checking online for rescue dogs to adopt. My first (rescue) love will always be Carl, the cat.
Course Creation & Development
On the banks of the Red Cedar, there is a school known to all…Michigan State University! I bleed green and white, and have done my best to convert everyone around me as well. After my time at State, I moved to Washington, D.C. where I had the good fortune to work for the American Red Cross on a project to increase communication and donations with its top 100 donors. I also had a great experience working for LivingSocial at the height of its popularity and growth. As an aspiring renaissance man, you’ll find this self-proclaimed cinephile diving into anything from starting a podcast, finishing a short story, learning how to make pasta from scratch, or hopping on a plane to Spain to watch the Running of the Bulls. This all comes from the fact I believe in a work-life blend, as long as you work really hard. At the age of 14 I co-founded a cut flower business to fund a school trip to Peru.
Marketing & Advertising
Communication is the key. With an Undergrad from Central Michigan University in Integrated Public Relations (Fire Up Chips!) and a Masters in Communication from Grand Valley State University, I can say, “I like school”. I’ve done everything, from working as a building supervisor at the Rec Center in college, to interning with a Single-A baseball team, to coordinating events at an event center. Many of my work stories include but are not limited to: baseball players, bridal parties, and herding cats (literally and figuratively speaking!). I love cooking, however I am known for being the slowest eater you will ever meet. Currently most of my time is spent working towards memorizing every children’s book, one at a time, with my 1 year old daughter. And yes, Jimmy Fallon, her first word was “DADA”.
Compliance & Course Content
With a degree in Industrial Environmental Health Management in Industrial Hygiene from Ferris State University, I have built 24 years of experience in creating and applying training in food manufacturing. This gave me a great amount of knowledge and experience in various roles involving Safety, Human Resources, Training, Sanitation and Operations. I’m all about being organized and love to visualize my projects. I am notorious for using Post-it notes to prioritize and problem solve on my desk or a board. The more colors, the better! Post-its are a must have at home too; with two very active girls my family loves being outside, playing sports, and staying on-the-go.
How you teach can be a big part of how well someone learns. Knowing different learning styles, how to engage an audience, and being able to think quick on your feet are important skills when training others. I’ve spent a lot of time in front of groups, teaching how to cultivate trust and build personal leadership skills. Since 2014, I have been developing e-learning courses for different organizations. I’ve worked with groups ranging from government agencies and food manufacturing, to non-profits and small businesses. Outside of work I’m not just about computer programs! I love spending time with my family, photography, and getting outside. As a kid growing up in Washington, I have great memories spending much of my life in the garage, hanging out with my “classic car junkie” Dad. Together we rebuilt the engine on my 1965 Mustang named Sally. Sally and I had a wonderful 13 years together, but was unable to make the move with me to Michigan.
As someone who has not only taught in both classroom and online settings, but from behind the pulpit as well, I know how important getting your message across to an audience can be. With a background in Religion, I had the unique opportunity to receive my Ph.D from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. I even got to visit Scotland, one of my favorite places! Outside of traveling, I enjoy cooking, reading, and playing the piano. Some of my fondest memories are growing up around the basketball court, helping my Dad who was Head Coach for the Boys Varsity Team.
